A water feature makes a beautiful addition to your garden, but in order to keep it working well and looking attractive, it needs to be properly maintained. There are a number of ways in which you can do this without allowing maintenance to become too time consuming or expensive.

First of all, pumps will need to be properly looked after. Over winter, they can struggle to keep working in low temperatures, so even if they appear to be functioning properly, clean and check them over regularly. Make sure the water level is high enough, because some pumps won’t work unless they are fully submerged. Remove any debris so that it doesn’t get sucked into the filter system.

Keep your water feature algae-free. There are a number of different products which you can choose from to do this, so make sure you purchase one which is suitable for you. This is especially important if you have animals to think about in the area, such as frogs or fish. There are products out there which are safe for them, so just ensure you’ve got the correct ones. It’s also recommended that the water is changed on a regular basis.

Check your water feature for damage or leaks. If you think that you might have a leak, you can put some food colouring into the water to trace where it is. It may be that a part needs replacing, or it might need some patching up. Once you’ve worked out where the leak is, you can decide how best to fix it.
