The loft of your home is an untapped resource, a way of increasing your living space and the value of your property all in one without having to plan lengthy, costly extensions. Of course, there are plenty of things you’ll need to think about if you do decide to convert your loft space. Here are some key considerations:

  1. Seek approval for your plans. Even if you don’t need planning permission, you are going to need to gain approval in accordance with Buildings Regulations.
  2. Consider the kinds of windows that you’re going to use, as the space will need natural light. Dormer windows can be a practical and attractive option for roof spaces. If the space is a more awkward shape, sun tunnels might be a good way to incorporate natural light.
  3. Make sure that your loft will meet with all the necessary regulations. For example, the materials used will need to comply with fire resistance standards. Carry out plenty of research to make sure that you’re aware of everything you should be doing.
  4. Hire an experienced professional. This way, you will be able to rely on the work which they are doing, and you’ll also be able to ask them for advice as they’ll have carried out similar work before.
  5. Check your insulation. Buildings Regulations insist that you have decent insulation in place as loft spaces can be subject to very high or very low temperatures.
